Carlops – retaining walls, steps and bench

This job involved building some very substantial retaining walls to hold back the steep slope in this Borders garden.

The client is undertaking a self-build extension to the rear of his house, and part of the job involved excavating a large chunk of the steeply sloped garden to make space for the building.  Having dug out the ground, Stone Inspired was called in to build some dry stone walls to retain the ground.

The tallest wall is 2.2m tall, with the total rise 3.2m.  To provide some visual appeal we topped the stone work off with turf, which over time will be planted with wild flowers and allowed to grow “wild”.  We also added a bench and some trade mark Stone Inspired curves.

37 tonnes of field stone from an old wall was used.
