Focus on – Dry Stone Walling projects – Before and After

This post looks at the transformation of a couple of gardens with the addition of some dry stone walling, landscaping and garden design.
One is a fairly large space and the other a very small.
Stirling – front garden re-design
The client got in touch as they wanted this steeply sloped garden to be terraced. They wanted the front garden to have visual appeal, provide space for planting and to provide better access to the front door.

Alston stone was used to ceated two dry stone terraces on the right hand side. A new staircase was made with wide and deep steps, and in an attractive S-shape. Boulders were built into the walls and the retaining walls were capped with stone on the lower terraces and sedum on the top. The sedum would provide year round colour.

All materials were supplied by Border Aggregates in Kelso apart from the sedum that came from Sedum Supply in Oswestry.
Glasgow – tiny front garden
The front garden at this main door property was split in two halves by the steps up to the front door. Each half measured 7m by 5m.
When I came to see the space, the client wanted a place to sit in the sun to drink her coffee, some planting space and generally a spruce up of the existing muddy mess.
The logistics of digging out the space and bringing in stone, aggregates, paving and the rest was a challenge. Everything was put on one side of the garden and had to be barrowed across the path. The path that was in regular use as the client worked from home running yoga classes!
It all turned out really well…
