About us

I’ve been working as a professional dry stone waller since 2000. After years chasing the dollar as a desk jockey, I found myself at a loose end, courtesy of an unexpected redundancy.

Dry stone walling was a hobby that I’d been dabbling in for a long time. Redundancy changed my plans, and I morphed my hobby into a career. I had started off working as a sole trader before setting up Stone Inspired Ltd that was incorporated in 2006 as a Limited company.

Over the years I have worked with several dry stone wallers such as Andrew Black, Richard Love, Euan Thompson, Callum Gray, John Shaw Rimmington and Akira Inman, but most of the work, and especially in the last 10 years, was built by myself.

I work throughout Central Scotland and recent jobs have seen me in Glasgow, Fife, East and West Lothian, Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, and Perth and Kinross. We’ve had forays to fur-flung places like Surrey, Aberdeen, Fraserburgh and Grangemouth!

If you would like us to quote on a walling idea that you have, please either use the contact details in the footer of this page, complete the short contact form or call me on 07880 761487. No job is too small or big!

I have been a member of the Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA) for many years. I passed the Intermediate level of their craftsman certification scheme many years ago. Although I have not taken their testing scheme further, I think I am at about their Advanced level (3 of 4). As well as being a working waller, I am a DSWA qualified walling instructor.

In a previous life I used to work in marketing…

I was one of three people short-listed in the stone category for the inaugural Balvenie/Sunday Telegraph craftsman of the year 2011.

2011 was a good year for awards as Stone Inspired won a Scottish Civic Trust best small project award for work done on a free-standing dry stone wall in Dollar.  The assessors commented “The Assessors were impressed with the workmanship and quality of finish on the wall. It makes a positive contribution to the road frontage and the owner is to be commended for undertaking the work and employing a true craftsman”.

In 2022, I was the lead stone worker on Jane Parkers “The Stil Garden” that won a gold medal at the Chelsea Flower and best in class for container/balcony gardens.

In 2023 we worked on the silver gilt award winning “Choose Love” garden at Chelsea.
