Working in West Lothian

West Lothian has been my local “patch” for much of my walling career. I’ve lived in the area nearly 20 years, with a short couple of years away in Fife. I’ve been fortunate to have been commisioned to build a large number and variety of drystone walling jobs in West Lothian. These are some of them.

Murieston – Drystone entranceway and gates

I designed and built these sweeping drystone walls on this entranceway at a property on the edge of Livingston. I used Alston stone from Border Aggregates in Kelso and the large boulders were from CED. They were placed at the end to act as feature and as a deterrent to protect the end of the walls from vehicles. Despite placing the boulders as a deterrant, the large end stone on the straight section has been driven into three times since I built the walls!

This was quite a big job. A full 8 yard builders skip was filled with soil as the garden had to be dug out by hand. The old broken paving was removed and new crazy paving brought in a laid. New dry stone retaining walls with flat caps were added. Finally new soil was added to make the beds.

Stone, paving, aggregates and cement were supplied by Border Aggregates.

Livingston – Retaining wall and paving

I built a vertically laid, curved drystone retaining wall in this garden in Livingston. The flat cap stones allow people to sit on the wall. Crevices for planting alpines were added too. A small paved area provided space for sitting.

This was a fairly straight-forward replacement of a rotten wooden decking space with stone.

Linlithgow – Drystone bench

I made this curved drystone bench with larch seat for this client in his back garden in Linlithgow. He completed the works, removing the old paving and adding gravel.

The stone came from Hutton Stone near to Berwick-upon-Tweed.
