Stirling front garden – A before and after.
A dry stone garden transformation in pictures
I took on this job in Stirling after the client asked whether I could do something to remedy the front garden. It was rather boring, the 45 degree slope difficult to mow and the steps were not ideal.
I came up with a simple sketched design for a new staircase that would be a visual focus; two terraces on the right hand side of the garden and single terrace on the left. We’d use Alston stone as it’s great for coursed stone work; black limestone slabs for the steps and flat cap stones.
The large boulders were a later idea, as was the sedum cap on the upper terrace.
Jobs like this ask to morph and change as the build progresses. And there were several changes to this one!
I am really pleased how this one turned out. A lot of work for one person. Building over the slabs on the steps was a challenge and there was a lot of materials to move by hand.
If it was easy, it wouldn’t be much fun!

The stone, the paving and most of the aggregates were supplied by Border Aggregates in Kelso. The rest was supplied by Jewsons in Stirling. The sedum that came from Sedum Supply in Oswestry.
