Project Description

A problem garden – steep slopes

The clients approached me earlier this year to discuss solutions to their steeply sloped garden near to Lanark. There was also a septic tank area that need sorting. The site screamed dry stone retaining walls!

The solution – dry stone terraces

We decided up a long, slightly curved dry stone retaining wall approximately 1m tall to the top of the copes.  A second lower wall would run parallel to wooden planters built in front of the house. These two walls would meet at a point at the highest point of the slope. The space between the two terraces would create a triangular shaped planting space.  Meanwhile, the septic tank would be contained by a three sided walled area.

Building on a slope and up a slope was a challenge!

Approximately 25 tonnes of Swinton Rubble from Hutton stone was used was used for this dry stone wall.
